Zoning Enforcement
Enforcement of the zoning ordinance regulations is a major function of the Zoning Enforcement Office, a division of the Metropolitan Planning Commission. This is handled by the zoning administrator, zoning inspectors, and office staff. A large part of the zoning administrator's duties involves investigating alleged violations of the zoning ordinance inside the city and planning limits.

The Zoning Office averages over 3,500 zoning inspections per year. Since there are only three enforcement officers who cover the entire planning limits, (approximately 300 square miles), violations are handled on a complaint basis. The Zoning Office depends greatly on the general public to notify it when violations, or suspected violations, are found.

Certificates & Applications
Another function of the Zoning Enforcement Office is to issue  Certificate of Occupancy.  A Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained from the office prior to occupying land or a building and shows proof that all safety regulations and zoning ordinance regulations have been met. The office issues over 1,300 Certificates of Occupancy each year.

A Home Occupation License Application must be completed for all home based businesses. You may also download a Sign Permit Application, if needed.

For any questions on Certificates of Occupancy or Home Occupation License Application, to obtain applications, or receive assistance in completing the application, please contact the Permit Center.
