Barksdale Air Force Base

Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB) in Louisiana has recently undergone significant expansions to enhance its operational capabilities. In September 2023, the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command awarded a $210.2 million contract to BL Harbert International for constructing a state-of-the-art Weapons Generation Facility (WGF) at Barksdale. This 28-acre complex will include a main building of approximately 300,000 square feet, along with support structures such as an entry control facility, security facility, fire pump building, diesel generator building, weather shelter, and multiple security towers. The WGF is designed to consolidate weapons storage, maintenance, and training, and is expected to be completed by January 2026.

Additionally, in August 2024, the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale AFB activated two new Bomber Generation Squadrons—the 20th and 96th—following the deactivation of the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. This restructuring aims to enhance combat readiness by organizing maintenance units into mission-specific squadrons capable of operating independently and aligning with operational bomb squadrons throughout deployment cycles.
