Seasonal Flu Shots are FREE and available to City employees, classified employees, Fire, Police, Library and City Courts, Retirees, Caddo Commission and Sheriff’s Department employees, Caddo Use and Sales Tax and Emergency Preparedness.

Employees insured by United Health Care can get the seasonal flu shot FREE at their private physician’s office. To be sure there is no charge, be sure to state that you don’t need to see the doctor – you just want the flu shot. It will be administered by a nurse and not your doctor.

Seasonal Flu Shots are currently available at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center at no cost to veterans.

Willis-Knighton Health System’s Work Care/Quick Care urgent-care clinics currently offer seasonal flu shots.

The Caddo Parish Health Unit will offer FREE seasonal flu shots November 16-20th and during a one-day statewide “Mass Drill” set for November 18, 2009 from 10:00am-6:00pm at the Caddo Parish Health Unit.

According to Jerre Perry, administrator for the Region 7 Office of Public Health, “The seasonal flu shot won’t keep you from getting the H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu. But the thinking is, avoid the seasonal flu and you’ll be healthy enough to fight off H1N1.”

Louisiana will get the H1N1 vaccine in batches by the end of November. High risk groups will get priority, such as children and young adults, health care workers and caregivers of pre-school age children. Perry says there should be enough of the vaccine so that everyone can get a shot during a four-month period. Peak flu season is January.

All City Department Heads are encouraged to keep staff members informed and updated on critical hand washing methods and other important safety precautions relative to Flu Preparedness. SPAR is delivering hand sanitizer to each floor in Government Plaza.

Current information that can be distributed via email, flyers or letters is available at:

www.dhh.louisiana.gov

Department heads are also encouraged to use the assistance of identified and trained safety officers within each city department who can be called in to do safety briefings to update and educate staffers.
