January 13, 2009 - MAYOR GLOVER JOINS PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA FOR A DAY OF SERVICE AND ENCOURAGES SERVICE ACTIVITIES IN SHREVEPORT

Six days from today on Monday, January 19, 2009 Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover will join President-Elect Barack Obama, wife Michelle and Washington D-C Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and mayors from across the country for an extraordinary day of service.

Mayor Glover has been asked to take part in Operation Gratitude, “A Day of Service for Our Military” where thousands of volunteers from across the country will meet on the field of the historic Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium to assemble care packages for the men and women serving our country.

“I consider it an honor and a privilege to stand with President-Elect Obama to honor Dr. King’s memory in a very real and tangible way,” says Glover. “And because Shreveport-Bossier is the home of Barksdale Air Force Base, this day of service will have a much deeper meaning for me, to see Dr. King’s teachings transformed into a national community service project that will demonstrate the tremendous and heartfelt support we have for those called to protect and defend our country.”

In Washington to attend the Mid-Winter Meeting of the U. S. Conference of Mayors and the Inauguration of President-Elect Obama, Mayor Glover reminds the citizens of Shreveport that Monday, January 19, 2009 is “Not a Day Off, But a Day On” and encourages participation in service activities and projects throughout the City.

Partnering with Shreveport Green, AmeriCorps and numerous organizations, as many as one hundred local projects are planed for the King Day of Service. Contact Lee Jeter at Shreveport Green (318.219.1888) to sign up for a service project.

The Mayor’s Office and City of Shreveport Department heads will join several volunteer organizations on Monday, January 19, 2009 to assist in building a memorial garden at Pine Grove Elementary School in memory of the late educator and Caddo School Board member Johnny L. Vance.

“The holiday provides a day off for many residents and a day away from school for students and educators,” says Jeter. “But we encourage everyone to make it a day on, in sincere volunteer service.”

On Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Shreveport’s Riverview Theatre, Mayor Glover, the City of Shreveport and the Baptist Minister’s Fellowship of Shreveport and Vicinity will join to sponsor “Realizing the Dream: A City-Wide Observance of the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The guest speaker will be noted Civil Rights leader and author Dr. Harold Carter, Pastor of the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Carter was a student at Alabama State College in 1952-1956 when the Montgomery Bus Boycott began. He was immediately embraced by Dr. King and Dr. Ralph Abernathy, ministerial friends of his family, often traveling with them interested in Christian ministry and being influenced by their leadership.

Dr. Carter credits New Shiloh’s congregation of more than 5,000 active members, Community Village with a Child Development Center, School of Music and Biblical & Theological Institute, to the Divine fire that continues to burn in his spirit, flowing out of the Civil Rights Movement and the historic leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The City-Wide Observance will recognize outstanding local leaders and honor the five remaining, living Civil Rights Pioneers in Shreveport history.

The event is free and open to the public.
