There could be a wave of cool air on the way for those in desperate need of air conditioning this summer. Thursday August 7, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Caddo Council on Aging, 4015 Greenwood Road, Mayor Glover and District A Councilman Calvin Lester will announce the availability of some 85 air conditioners. | The units are apart of Councilman Lester’s “Beat the Heat” program that in 2006 purchased, distributed, and installed air conditioners to elderly and disabled residents who qualified to receive the assistance of the City’s Department of Community Development. | “With the recent days of extreme and unfortunately in some cases, deadly summer temperatures, I was alerted last week by Community Development that 85 air conditioners from the ’06 program were in their warehouse and available for citizens in need,” says Lester. | “We want them off of the shelves immediately and into the homes of those who are struggling to survive the heat,” says Mayor Glover. | “With this month’s temperatures of over one hundred degrees, for elderly and disabled residents with no income or low income, this comes as a tremendous blessing,” says CCOA director Mary Alice Roundtree. | Shreveport’s Department of Community Development will disburse “Beat the Heat” air conditioners according to program guidelines, on a first-come, first-serve basis. |
