In a statement issued today, Mayor Cedric B. Glover reiterated that all “i’s were dotted and t’s crossed” in the demolition of the structure at 101 Douglas Street. | “Make no mistake about it, (and despite comments to the contrary) this Administration is and will continue to be sensitive to the historic significance of the St. Paul Bottoms/Ledbetter Heights area as well as all the other historic districts or structures in the City. The Ledbetter Heights area is key to the City’s history and our redevelopment plans are being drawn in such a way to highlight and preserve the historic character of this area. Structures will be preserved in place where practical or relocated when permitted in an effort to continue the redevelopment momentum started by the “Ledbetter-Millennium Film Project”, says Mayor Glover. “My staff has been and continues to be in contact with state officials regarding demolition in the area including but not limited to the Douglas Street property and as early today, Pam Breaux, State Historic reservation Officer again reaffirmed by letter to me that “.. to our knowledge there was no federal involvement in the destruction of the house at 101 Douglas Street. Absent federal involvement, the National Historic Preservation Act contains no requirement for consultation with our office under Section 106 of that law.” |
