June 1, 2007 - Removal of Radio Tower at Shreveport’s David Raines Park

Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover has called for the immediate removal of a five hundred foot radio tower at Shreveport’s David Raines Park.

Scheduled for demolition Thursday June 6th by the Caddo Parish Commission, Friday June 1st the tower and the area surrounding it was cited as being “very dangerous” after guide wires broke away from the tower.

Because of the possible danger, Friday the Commission ordered the immediate evacuation of the David Raines Medical Center, Recreational Center, the David Raines Pool and the Sprayground. They are now closed to the public and the area surrounding the tower has been secured.

“I have ordered the Caddo Parish Commission to contact the demolition company and get them in here this weekend. It’s imperative that the area is made safe and danger free” as soon as humanly possible”, says Mayor Glover.

Late Friday Commission officials alerted Mayor Glover that the demolition company had been contacted and is making plans to bring a 50-ton crane to Shreveport, with orders to demolish the radio tower as early as this weekend, or no later than Tuesday June 5th.

Until the tower is demolished, alternate plans have been made for the 60 children attending SPAR’s Summer Camp at the David Raines Center.

If you have questions concerning the SPAR Programs until the time of demolition, you can call: 673 – 7751.
