May 31, 2007 – Mayor Glover Announces Henry Whitehorn as Shreveport’s New Police Chief

Louisiana’s Deputy Secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections and Superintendent of State Police Colonel Henry L. Whitehorn emerges from pool of 18 highly qualified applicants as the choice of Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover for the City’s police chief.

“18 applicants passed the test and it was my commitment to give equal and fair and full consideration to each of those 18 applicants”, says Glover. “We had some outstanding individuals both from within this department and from around this state, any number of which was well qualified and well prepared, but I was looking for a very special, unique individual, one that was going to be the type of person who would step forward and help us shift the paradigm and help us go about the work of making Shreveport a safer and better City and we found that person”.

Whitehorn’s background includes nearly three decades of service with Louisiana State Police and significant experience in criminal investigations and management.

“During my 29 plus years of law enforcement experience I have shown leadership, initiative, creativity in problem solving and a commitment for excellence in all areas of responsibility”, says Whitehorn. “My educational background in Criminal Justice and Management combined with practical experiences has been excellent preparation for this appointment”.

With Mayor Glover’s appointment, Whitehorn becomes Interim Police Chief. His official start date is August 1, 2007. Until then Assistant Chief Mike Vansant will stay on as SPD’s Chief in Charge of day-to-day operations. Mayor Glover says he will take Whitehorn’s confirmation to council members June 12th.

First order of business for the new Interim Chief begins Friday June 1 at 8:00 AM. Whitehorn will meet with his executive staff of the Shreveport Police Department.

“When it comes to leading Henry Whitehorn is certainly prepared and equipped to become the next chief of the city of Shreveport”.
