Beginning Wednesday, September 16, 2009 the downstairs lobby of Shreveport’s Government Plaza will become a fun and exciting public art gallery for a talented group of young artists close to the heart of Mayor Cedric B. Glover. | The exhibit “The Colors of Courage” will showcase the beautiful, vibrant and compelling artwork of children who are patients of Shreveport’s Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic. The exhibit is free and will be open to the public through January 15, 2009. | “I first became aware of the extraordinary talents of these young artists in 2007 when two delightful little ladies 5-year old Kel’Nesha Odom and 9-year old Kami Chauncy painted my first and only portrait,” says Mayor Glover. “It was an experience I will never forget. As we laughed and talked I bonded with these two little girls whose wisdom is well beyond their years and I was deeply inspired by their love for their families, for others, their faith, hope and courage to endure their illness with the hope of one day being cancer free.” | Mayor Glover will proudly host a reception Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of Government Plaza to introduce the public to the many talented artists of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic. | “We are indebted to the Mayor for his interest and support of the Arts in Medicine Program and for the opportunity to showcase what we believe is the best art there is in this region,” says Jonathan Glass, MD, Director of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. “Children with cancer are heroes—they do not see the adversity of their situation but are upbeat and enthusiastic. Their desire to prevail is seen in the art they do which is colorful, expressive, and playful and is reflected in the title of the exhibit, “The Colors of Courage”, a title created by 12 year old Jacob Jerome and his 15 year old sister Taylor Jerome.” | The Colors of Courage exhibit will be open for public viewing Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. from September 16 through January 16 2010. | Members of the Media are Invited | THE COLORS OF COURAGE | Reception & Exhibit | Wednesday, September 16, 2009 | 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. | Government Plaza, Lobby | # # # | www.shreveportla.gov |
