August 7, 2009 - MAYOR GLOVER APPLAUDS TODAY’S U.S. SENATE CONFIRMATION OF KELVIN COCHRAN

Mayor Cedric B. Glover applauds the Senate’s confirmation today of Shreveport native Kelvin J. Cochran as the Administrator of the United States Fire Administration.

“I am extremely pleased, overjoyed and beaming with pride,” says Mayor Glover. “One of Shreveport’s native sons now holds the highest ranking fire service position in the country. As that little boy from Allendale steps forward to become a key member of the Obama Administration, the City of Shreveport, the Shreveport Fire Department and the entire state of Louisiana extends a heartfelt congratulation to Chief Cochran and his family. This Presidential appointment and today’s Senate confirmation, speaks to the caliber of the men and women of the Shreveport Fire Department.”

Cochran will serve as the United States Fire Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency Department of Homeland Security and will oversee federal policy, legislation, training and education of all of the nation’s fire departments.

Cochran takes to the White House twenty-eight years of extensive experience in fire service including firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, public education, research and development, personnel management and administration, with a specialization in training and strategic planning.

Most recently, Chief Cochran served as Fire Chief for the City of Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, overseeing thirty-five fire stations and providing fire, rescue and emergency medical services.

Rising from the ranks of the Shreveport Fire Department, as a Firefighter and Assistant Training Officer Chief Cochran served as Shreveport’s first African-American Fire Chief. His keen professional and leadership skills positioned him to also serve as President of the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association, the 1st Vice President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), and Vice Chairman of Volunteers of America (VOA).
