Oluwatomi Adegboyega had no idea what he was in for, but he had been summoned by Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover to appear at the City Council’s meeting Tuesday, June 23, 2009. He sat with his parents patiently waiting in council chambers. | Last month Oluwatomi was among the 1,980 students that graduated this year from Caddo Public High Schools. He graduated with a very unique distinction, one that’s always under the watchful eye of Mayor Glover. Tommy, as he’s called by friends, was the only 2009 graduating senior with perfect attendance. From first grade through his senior year, Tommy did not miss one single day. | Mayor Glover asked his young, distinguished guest to join him at the council dais, to present him with a surprise, something Glover says every student can strive to achieve…a laptop computer. | “In recognition of the outstanding achievement that you’ve attained perfect attendance, I am privileged to present to you this complimentary laptop computer from me individually, to you,” said Glover. | “As a staunch supporter of education I believe that attendance is just as important as your grades,” said Mayor Glover. “We’re told that 90% of success is just showing up and Tommy showed up every single day for 12 straight years.” | At the beginning of his term, Mayor Glover announced he would reward high school graduates with 12 years of perfect attendance with a laptop computer. “I believe children must be in school to take full advantage of the opportunities that education offers.” | In 2007 there were three students. In 2008 there were none. This year there was one, Oluwatomi Adegboyega. |
