Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover and members of the Shreveport City Council gave a standing ovation at its meeting Tuesday, June 23, 2009 as Mayor Glover called attention to the hard work, commitment and outstanding accomplishments of those who received this year’s Small Business Awards from the Shreveport-Bossier African-American Chamber of Commerce. | “We refer to this organization today as the Shreveport-Bossier African-American Chamber of Commerce,” said Mayor Glover. “But in one of its previous manifestations, it was the Negro Chamber of Commerce and anybody who hears that name soon afterwards utters the name Donnie Wilson. Mr. Wilson who was the long time president of the chamber loved it dearly and worked untiring to advance the causes of African-American and disadvantaged businesses throughout this area for not just years but decades. He is up there looking down today, smiling on the leadership of Mr. White as well as the legacy that these outstanding business folk are carrying on. So thank you for carrying that legacy on.” | Receiving Mayor Glover’s distinguished Award of Excellence were Edwin B. Jones P.E. whose engineering company EJES, Incorporated was selected as the Chamber’s 2009 Small Business of the Year. Tahira Abdul-Rahman, owner of Tahira & Associates Realty, Incorporated who is the Chamber’s 2009 Outstanding Business Woman of the Year and James E. Thrower Jr. Co-founder and CEO of Metropolitan Circles, LLC chosen as the 2009 Outstanding Business Man of the Year. | Chamber President Booker White was also honored by Mayor Glover for his bold leadership and coalition building among board members and local businesses and doing so in a very fine and efficient way. | The Shreveport-Bossier African-American Chamber of Commerce announced it’s 2009 winners at an awards luncheon held June 9, 2009 at the Clarion Hotel. |
