March 31, 2009 - MAYOR GLOVER AND PCAL TO HOST REGIONAL COMMUNITY MEETING ON CHILD WELFARE

Partnering with Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana (PCAL) Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover has called a Community Meeting for Thursday April 2, 2009 from 6 – 8 PM at Shreveport’s Riverview Hall.

All citizens, parents, educators, child welfare advocates, family support groups and youth assistance organizations are invited to join Mayor Glover and City leaders in an open and public dialogue to involve the community in discussing and defining clear and effective ways to support and protect children.

In 2006 nationwide, an estimated 3.6 million children were accepted by state and local Child Protective Services as alleged victims of child maltreatment for investigation or assessment and 23,911 allegations were made in Louisiana in 2007.

“This Community Meeting is something we’ve needed for a long time,” says Sharon Reed, Regional Director of Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana. “What Mayor Glover is doing is ground breaking … bringing the community together with the various organizations and agencies to educate us about the agencies and services that are available to keep our children safe. My hope is that his “Call to Action” and the support of the Shreveport Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing Division will be the stimulus to put into action a broad-based coalition for children.”

“Having been an active supporter of Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana’s mission and the work they do here in the Northwest Region, I am honored that I can serve in a role that will help bring more awareness for the prevention of child abuse and neglect,” says Mayor Glover.

April is Prevent Child Abuse Month and Mayor Glover has been selected by PCAL to serve as this year’s Honorary Chair of the Northwest Louisiana Region’s 2009 Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign.

“We are thrilled to have Mayor Glover join the campaign in such an important and visible role,” says Sharon Reed, PCAL Region Director. “With his leadership, commitment and voice, I am certain that not only will there be a great increase in awareness and focusing on the prevention of child abuse and neglect, but much needed dollars will be raised to support our effort both in the northwest region and statewide.”

“As a region we must do all we can to keep our children safe and ensure that our families have the necessary resources and education to raise their children in loving environments,” says Mayor Glover.
