Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover and members of the Shreveport City Council announce that the City of Shreveport’s Workforce Investment Act program is receiving $2,592,712 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Of that amount, $1,344,838 will be used to implement an expanded Summer Youth Employment Program for youth 14 through 24 years of age. The balance of the stimulus funds will be used for Adults and Dislocated Worker activities. | “For the past two years the City Council has made it possible to offer summer employment for the youngsters of this City, but this year was forced to make the tough decision to cut summer jobs,” says Mayor Glover. “But we stand today very pleased to announce a reprieve of sorts, an opportunity to use federal stimulus funds to offer a bigger, better and more community involved summer jobs program for youngsters as young as 14 and even young adults up to age 24.” | Community Development Director Mrs. Bonnie Moore has named Workforce Enforcement Bureau Chief Herman Vital to direct the Youth Employment Program which now greatly broadens the scope and benefit of the City’s previous and highly successful summer jobs programs. | “These stimulus funds will allow us to offer full-time 40 hr. week jobs to as many as 1,000 youngsters,” says Moore. “Mr. Vital has assembled a team that’s on a fast-track to prepare a Regional Plan to identify the scope of activities, employment opportunities and time frame.” | Keenly aware of the impact and benefit for Shreveport, Mayor Glover traveled to Washington D.C. to personally lobby for the City’s Summer Youth Employment Program to be included in the Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. | “This additional funding also gives us the added bonus of conducting the summer program with our business partners and private employers in conjunction with local non-profit and public agencies,” adds Mayor Glover. | The Recovery Act allows summer activities to operate from May 1, 2009 to September 30, 2009. | For more information contact Herman Vital, Workforce Enforcement Bureau Chief @ 318.683.7500. |
