January 22, 2009 - MAYOR GLOVER RESPONDS TO SHREVEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT’S 2008 CRIME REPORT

Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover expresses thanks and appreciation to Chief Henry L. Whitehorn, the men and women of the Shreveport Police Department, Jim Holt and the men and women of the Property Standards Office, the distinguished members of the Shreveport City Council, the leaders of the faith and ministerial community, our energetic neighborhood associations and especially the citizens of the City of Shreveport for all collectively putting their shoulders to the wheel and pushing the Shreveport crime rate to a 31 year low. Shreveport has not seen across the board crime numbers this low since 1978. A year when Mayor Glover was in the 7th Grade and Student Council President at Linear Jr. High, the price of regular gasoline was $0.63 per gallon, the Dallas Cowboys had only won two Super Bowls, the Dow-Jones Average peaked at 893 and a first-class stamp cost $0.13.

“It is difficult to find the words to express just how much I appreciate the level of effort that has been put forth from every sector and section of this city towards addressing both the perception and reality of the city’s crime challenge,” says Mayor Glover. “If we are to stabilize and grow this city we must face head-on the challenge of lowering our actual crime numbers while at the same time changing the perception that many, both in and outside of the city, have of Shreveport as a place to live, work and do business.”

“The year 2007 was the first time in almost a decade that the violent crime rate in Shreveport fell in comparison to the previous year. Last year’s reductions are even more impressive and substantial, but we can and we must do even better. But that will happen only if we are all willing to stay the course and increase our efforts. The issues of increased pay and increased staffing within the Shreveport Police Department have not gone away. We must be willing to face these challenges head on,” says Mayor Glover.

“I look forward to working with the City Council and our citizens as we collectively seek the best solutions for these issues.”
