On the actual birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the City of Shreveport will host a city-wide observance of the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thursday January 15, 2009 at 7 PM at Shreveport’s Riverview Theatre. | Realizing the Dream: A City-wide Observance of the Live of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will feature civil rights pioneer and author Dr. Harold Carter, pastor of the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland as guest speaker. | Carter was a student at Alabama State College in 1952-1956 when the Montgomery bus boycott began. He immediately was embraced by Dr. King and Ralph Abernathy, ministerial friends of his family, and often traveled with them, developing a keen interest in Christian ministry and was greatly influenced by their visionary leadership. | Co-sponsored by the Baptist Ministers Fellowship of Shreveport and Vicinity, the observance will also recognize outstanding local civic leaders and pay special tribute to the five remaining, living Civil Rights Pioneers in Shreveport history. | The event is free, open to the public and will serve as the official kickoff of MLK observations in Shreveport-Bossier. |
