OFFICE OF PUBLIC WORKS

The Office of Public Works is responsible for maintaining the City of Shreveport’s streets and drainage systems, traffic signs, signals and street lights, as well as, for providing recycling opportunities and solid waste collection and disposal services.  Additionally, this office issues all permits for new construction or remodeling and maintains the majority of all city owned vehicles.

Public Works is one of the City’s largest operating entities. We employ 370 persons and have an annual budget of more than $33,000,000.  The Office of Public Works is headed by Michael R. Wood, who has been Deputy Director since January, 2009. He is responsible for six divisions within the Office.  They include:

  • Administration, which includes budget support and contract monitoring 

  • Fleet Services, which is responsible for the overall maintenance of City vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment assigned throughout City of Shreveport departments, and ensures the City complies with all Federal regulations regarding underground storage tanks.

  • Permits and Inspections, which issues all permits and licenses for new construction and remodeling

  • Solid Waste, which collects garbage and yard waste from more than 75,000 households in Shreveport and Bossier City, is responsible for the City’s recycling program and manages the Woolworth Road Regional Landfill

  • Streets and Drainage, which maintains the City’s streets, drainage ditches and pipes, alleys and rights-of-way, and provides forestry services for trees in City right-of-way

  • Traffic Engineering, which maintains the City’s traffic signals, signs, street lights, and street striping.
