Job Description for Police Communication Officer I


Association of Public Safety Communication Officers Certification

The Police Communications Officer (PCO) is responsible to the CSB Commander or their designated representative. Each must perform their duties in accordance with SPD administrative policy, the provisions of this manual and any other applicable regulatory documents.

The PCO must function as the primary telecommunicator for the SPD in such areas as emergency call processing, dispatching and computerized message handling. A general assignment of PCO duties are as follows:


Requirements


Operational:

Answers police public assistance lines and E9-1-1 trunks, determines assistance mode and processes calls in accordance with established guidelines.

Dispatches calls for service to police patrol units, receives or relays messages, and broadcasts police information via two-way radio or paging system. Computer Aided Patrol Dispatch

Monitor and maintain the status and activity of police patrol units using a computer aided dispatch system.
Request assistance from, or relay information to: area public safety agencies, government services or various companies, organizations or individuals for the purpose of conducting routine or emergency police business.

Makes computerized information searches, sends messages via law enforcement data communications networks and fax facilities and maintains required record filing system.

Maintains logs of wreckers called for vehicles involved in accidents, abandoned autos and impounds.
Reports equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel.

 Administrative:

 Assist in the training of new PCOs by giving them on-the-job instruction and performing related teaching assignments.

Prepares reports, conducts file research and informs supervisory staff of problems or other matters that require attention.

Minimum Requirements


Must be a U.S. citizen
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
Must pass the Municipal Police Civil Service Exam for Police Communications Officer I
Must have high school diploma or valid certificate of equivalency
Must have a valid drivers license
Must demonstrate typing ability of 35 WPM
Must pass an extensive background check, Polygraph test, and have no felony convictions
Must pass a general physical exam
Must pass the 40 hour APCO (Association of PublicSafety Communication Officers) basic telecommunicator course, the 32 hour EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) basic course, and 8 hour TDD (Telephone Device for the Deaf) basic course
