13th Basic Auxiliary Officer Training Class

The Shreveport Police Department's Auxiliary Police Officers program is made up of volunteer citizens who want to give something back to the city in which they work and live.  Section 121 of the Shreveport City Ordinance authorizes the Chief of Police to appoint eligible persons as "Auxiliary Police Officers" in such numbers as deemed necessary in the best interest of the city.

Auxiliary Officers are not sworn peace officers and as such they are not armed and they have no arrest powers.  The Auxiliary has a current staffing of 20 officers and is a part of the Community Oriented Policing program.  Since it's inception in 1997, Shreveport Auxiliary Police Officers have contributed over 25,000 hours of service.  The Auxiliary Police group has been awarded the Outstanding Unit Citation twice by the Chief of Police and numerous commendations have been awarded to individual officers.

If you are looking for a rewarding experience while making a difference in lives of the citizens of Shreveport, the Shreveport Auxiliary Police unit may be just what you are looking for!

Duties of the Auxiliary Officer

Auxiliary Officers perform a number of routine activities.  Specific duties include directing traffic, writing minor accident reports, issuing parking citations, impounding abandoned vehicles,  and assisting police officers in non-enforcement duties.

Auxiliaries also respond to emergency situations and are subject to call out 24 hours a day.  During the evacuation of south Louisiana due to Hurricane Rita, Auxiliary Officers were stationed at various spots around the city to direct evacuees to shelters.  They then did security patrols of the shelter parking lots for the next several weeks.  Hazmat spills, power outages and major accidents are some of the other situations that Auxiliary Officers respond to any time of the day or night.

Auxiliary Officers work special events as well.  The Independence Bowl, Mardi Gras parades, the Rockets Over The Red Fireworks Show and the Sickle Cell Softball Tournament are just a few of the events where you will see officers at work.

Training

Individuals accepted into the Auxiliary program will undergo 40 hours of training at the Shreveport Police Regional Training Academy. Classes are conducted two nights a week (Mon. & Wed) over a five week period. The staff of the Shreveport Police Training Academy and supervising officers provide the necessary training to provide applicants with the knowledge, skills and abilities required of them for the nature of their assigned tasks.

Training Dates:  May 7, 2012  -  June 13, 2012

After completing the five weeks of classroom study, successful graduates go into the Field Training Program. Trainees are assigned to a Field Training Officer with whom they will ride once a week for a 90 day probationary period. During this time they get hands-on training in traffic control, tow sheet preparation, writing parking citations, radio procedures, police driving and other duties and situations they are likely to encounter while on patrol.

Auxiliary Officers attend a monthly retraining and informational meeting at the police station. They can also take advantage of additional training at the Academy such as gang and narcotics identification.

When properly trained, the Chief of Police will authorize issuance of an identification card as well as an initial issue of uniforms and equipment. The Chief of Police sets specifications for uniforms and other items of equipment or supplies for Auxiliary Officers as deemed necessary and in the best interest of the City of Shreveport. Uniforms are worn by Auxiliary Officers only when they are on active duty.
