Shreveport Police arrest suspect in Milam St. shooting

Shreveport Police detectives have arrested a local man in connection with a shooting that sent a teenager to the hospital this morning.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. this morning, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to Booker T. Washington High School in the 2100 block of Milam St. relative to a shooting. Upon arrival there, officers discovered 18 year old Tammie Spates suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Spates was transported to LSUHSC by the Shreveport Fire Department with what have been described as non life threatening injuries.

Spates was able to talk with investigators and provided them with the name of the male suspect who had attacked her. Based on these statements and other witness accounts, officers were quickly able to identify the suspected shooter and, within a very short time period, were able to locate the suspect near the 2900 block of Portland Ave. The suspect, who had apparently abandoned the vehicle he was driving, was captured by officers after a lengthy foot pursuit.

Detectives have now interviewed the suspect, identified as 28 year old Tony Holden of the 5300 block of Fairfax Ave. in Shreveport, and believe that this shooting stems from an altercation between Holden and the victim. Investigators believe that Spates and Holden have been romantically involved and that Spates was his intended victim and that the school had nothing to do with the shooting other than being the geographical location where she was shot. No other students or faculty members were hurt and the school was placed on lockdown as a result of this incident.

Shreveport Police Chief Henry Whitehorn, who was working with his command staff on scene, commented, “We are outraged that this suspect would put the lives of students and faculty members at risk by firing a handgun on school grounds. I am proud of my officers and of our working relationship with Dr. Dawkins and the Caddo Parish School District. Within an hour of this shooting we had a violent offender in custody and no faculty members or other students were injured.”

Holden has been booked into the Shreveport City Jail on one count each of attempted second degree murder and felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. The carnal knowledge charge is going to stem from Holden’s ongoing relationship with Spates.
