Robbery suspect arrested, charged with at least one other

Shreveport Police have arrested a Shreveport man after an armed robbery yesterday afternoon and have charged him with at least one other robbery.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on July 11, 2009, Shreveport Police patrol officers responded to a reported armed robbery at the Discount Tobacco store in the 2300 block of Line Ave. A witness told investigators that two male suspects entered the store, one producing a black semi-automatic handgun, and demanded money from the clerk at gunpoint. The suspects received an undisclosed amount of money and fled the store in a cranberry colored vehicle. No one was injured during the robbery.

As officers conducted their investigation, a witness was able to provide them with a license plate number of the vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene. Following up on this tip, officers were able to locate one of the suspects and take him into custody. Officers have arrested 28 year old John Chambers of the 2000 block of Grimmett Dr. in Shreveport and charged him with one count of armed robbery in connection with the robbery of the Discount Tobacco store. After interviewing Chambers, detectives have also charged him with one count of armed robbery in connection with the robbery of the Southern Hills Grocery back on July 9, 2009. Detectives believe Chambers is responsible for other armed robberies and anticipate clearing several more with his arrest. Investigators are working to identify and apprehend Chambers' accomplice in these crimes.
