Shreveport Police charge suspect in narcotics investigation

Shreveport Police detectives have charged a local man in connection with a narcotics investigation in downtown Shreveport.

At approximately 5:40 p.m. yesterday afternoon, agents with the Caddo Shreveport Narcotics Unit were attempting to arrest John C. Bernos in the 400 block of Spring St. just north of its intersection with Texas Ave. Agents had received information that Bernos was transporting a large quantity of prescription narcotics. As the agents identified themselves as police officers and moved in to arrest Bernos, he attempted to flee the scene in a 2000 Toyota Tundra pick-up truck. During his flight to evade capture, Bernos tried to run over one of the agents, who was forced at that point to fire one shot from his department issued service weapon at the suspect.

The suspect continued on and fled across the river into Bossier City where he was ultimately stopped and taken into custody by authorities there. Agents were able to recover narcotics that Bernos had thrown from the vehicle as he fled police. There were two passengers in the truck, an adult male and a one month old female. The adult male was interviewed as a witness to this incident and released. The infant was released to her mother. No one was injured during this offense.

John C. Bernos, 26 years old, of the 8100 block of N. Lakeshore Dr., has been booked into the Shreveport City Jail and charged with attempted first degree murder, possession with intent to distribute of a schedule III narcotic, possession with intent to distribute of a schedule IV narcotic, and child desertion.
