Shreveport Police detectives investigating shooting

Shreveport Police detectives are investigating a shooting that sent a local woman to the hospital this morning.

At approximately 11:23 a.m. this morning, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the Westwood Village Apartments located at 6777 Rasberry Ln. relative to a shooting. Upon arrival there, officers discovered 23 year old Mahoganey Hamilton suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. Hamilton was transported to LSUHSC by the Shreveport Fire Department with what has been described as a life threatening injury.

Shreveport Police detectives were able to talk with Hamilton before she was taken into surgery and she told investigators that she accidentally shot herself as she was trying to unload a handgun. There was another person in the apartment at the time of the shooting and detectives have questioned that person, but no charges have been filed at this time. Officers seized two handguns that were inside the residence as evidence.

Officers had responded to the same location yesterday afternoon at approximately 2:00 p.m. in reference to a domestic trouble call. At that time, officers interviewed Ms. Hamilton and issued a misdemeanor summons to 23 year old Cartrez Buris charging him with one count of domestic abuse battery. Detectives are working to determine if that incident is related in any way to this shooting.
