Memorial Day boating and travel tips
The Shreveport Police Department and Chief of Police Henry Whitehorn encourages citizens and travelers to have a safe and happy Memorial Day.
Since Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, it is important to remember that safety comes first when it comes to celebrations and fun.
If plans include boating, make sure all watercraft is equipped with personal flotation devices. Make sure all passengers wear them and that they fit properly. Let family members know where you're going and when you plan to return. If you go out in a group, make sure you don't overload the boat and be careful in bodies of water that may be unfamiliar. Also, be familiar with boating rules and operating regulations.
Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs, nor boat in swimming area.
Safety is also important for swimmers. Parents need to make sure their children are well supervised, and that they do not run around the swimming pool area. Always make sure a flotation device is available to throw to swimmers who are having trouble.
If citizens plan to travel this Memorial Day, make sure their vehicles have been thoroughly checked. Make sure fluid levels and tires are in good shape, and make sure to observe all traffic laws.
Buckling up saves lives.
The Shreveport Police Department is participating in the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission's Click It or Ticket Campaign, so motorists need to be aware that officers will be out in force, making sure people are wearing their safety belts and driving within the posted speed limits.
Memorial Day is the start of summer fun. By taking a little extra precaution when it comes to safety, the entire summer can be memorable and enjoyable for everyone.
