Governor’s Proclamation

Governor Bobby Jindal has issued a proclamation, proclaiming May 9-11 as Fit for Life Weekend in the State of Louisiana.

The proclamation will be read and presented at today's Fit for Life luncheon, which takes place today at 1:30 p.m. at Eldorado Resort and Casino. The luncheon is presented by the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco Free Living, the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Authority and the Eldorado Resort and Casino. Eight-time Mr. Olympia, Lee Haney, is the guest speaker.

The Proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, over 60 percent of deaths in Louisiana are attributed to heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, and an alarming percentage of young people are plagued with obesity; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services reports that regular exercise and fitness activity has been shown to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates stemming from chronic diseases; and

WHEREAS, given the magnitude of the health and fitness problem facing Americans today, particularly children, it is imperative that high-level, consistent emphasis be placed on improving the health and fitness of the citizens of the State of Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, Fit for Life Weekend is dedicated to improving the health, fitness and wellness of all Americans; especial, the citizens of Shreveport and the State of Louisiana at large; and

WHEREAS, Fit for Life Weekend benefits our communities by focusing on health and fitness education, awareness and wellness opportunities for citizens of the City of Shreveport and the State of Louisiana, and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bobby Jindal, Governor of the State of Louisiana, do hereby proclaim the weekend of May 9-11, as FIT FOR LIFE WEEKEND in the State of Louisiana.
