Police re-activate drug hotline

Shreveport Police Department is offering citizens an additional way to provide tips about drug activity in their neighborhoods -- and now, in all of Caddo Parish. It has re-activated a drug hotline known as Residents Against Pushers. The number is 673-RAPS, or 673-7277.

Currently, the Shreveport Police Department offers "Drug Stoppers" on its web site, http://www.ci.shreveport.la.us/dept/police/index.htm Through e-mail, supervisors can communicate with anonymous citizens who provide information to the department. This is particularly advantageous when the agents have specific questions about a tip.

The hotline was phased out once "Drug Stoppers" hit the web a couple of years ago. However, it is being re-activated in hopes that it will provide yet another way for citizens to stay in contact with police. Another change is that it will be monitored by the Caddo-Shreveport Narcotics Task Force and will serve all of Caddo Parish, not just the city of Shreveport.

Callers are asked to give details of the type of activity that is occurring, when it is occurring, the names, nicknames or descriptions of people involved and a description of any vehicles that may be involved.

The hotline will not be manned by narcotics agents. It is simply a voice mailbox that residents can leave messages on. If they wish, they can leave their name and a phone number where they can be reached, and an agent will contact them the next business day. Or, they may call the Narcotics Division at 673-7040 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
