FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Police investigate officer-involved shooting
Updated information as of 2 p.m.
The suspect in this case, 21-year-old Raymond Darnell, is in critical condition at LSU Hospital. The female who was shot by Darnell is in serious condition. Both are in the Intensive Care Unit.
Darnell is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and possession of a sawed off shotgun.
The officers involved in the shooting were Cpl. Joshua Feliciano and Officer Freddie Clinton. Feliciano has been with the department for nearly seven years, while Clinton has been with SPD for five years.
Officer Clinton is the officer who was flagged down by the victim, Arlisha McDonald. Cpl. Feliciano is the officer who arrived on scene while the shooting was underway.
The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday night near the intersection of Doris and Broadway when Darnell rammed his lime green SUV into McDonald’s green Toyota Camry. The Camry ultimately crashed into a utility pole.
McDonald fled to Officer Clinton’s patrol car for help. Meanwhile, Darnell reportedly got out of the car, approached the officer and the woman with a sawed-off shotgun and began firing the weapon. Darnell shot McDonald at least once in the buttocks.
Officer Clinton returned fire in protection of the woman, as well as himself. At that time, Cpl. Feliciano arrived on scene after hearing the officer’s call for help saw the ongoing shooting and engaged the suspect, shooting him at least once in the upper torso.
McDonald and Darnell were both transported to LSU Hospital.
Darnell has a history of arrests by SPD for threatening the victim and making harassing phone calls to her. He is currently on probation for false imprisonment while armed with a dangerous weapon for an incident in Ouachita Parish.
The two officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
