Shreveport police prepare to Shop with a Cop

Shreveport Police officers will join the Fraternal Order of Police on Friday at Wal-Mart on Mansfield Road at 5 p.m. to help local disadvantaged children Shop with a Cop.

Each child who gets to shop will get to pick out toys, clothes and other items they would like for Christmas. In most -- if not all of the cases – these items are the only things they will get for Christmas this year.

Some of the stories of these children will break your heart.

• One child has a mother with skin cancer, who is in and out of jobs because of it.

• Another mother’s husband died, leaving her to care for her two kids with no job.

• Four other recipients are being raised by their grandmother who had a stroke.

• Still, another child lives in a home that has no electricity.

In many cases, the children don’t want to buy things for themselves. They want to buy things for their parents or siblings in the spirit of giving. After all, that is what Christmas is all about.
