Shreveport police have successfully concluded two operations that addressed drunk driving, seat belt usage and other traffic safety issues.
The first operation was a year-long enforcement grant that provided $50,300 in grant money to reduce accidents by enforcing traffic laws.
In one year, grant money funded 1,817 overtime hours for officers who wrote 807 red light citations, arrested 148 people for DWI and issued 1,709 occupant protection citations. The results of the operation were about 25 percent higher than the goals originally set for the grant period.
The second operation -- called the Safe and Sober Campaign -- provided $5,600 in overtime funding for officers to be used on specific holidays during the past year.
In total, officers worked 200 hours and arrested 21 people for DWI, wrote 217 seat belt citations and issued nine tickets for no child restraints.
The grants were provided by state and federal highway safety funds.
The Shreveport Police Department has received more grant money for another year to make Shreveport safer for motorists.
