Shreveport police have arrested a 17-year-old high school student in connection with the shooting death of another high school student.
Nathan C. Johnson is charged with second-degree murder for the homicide of 18-year-old Elliott Jefferson. The shooting occurred at 11:30 p.m. Saturday outside the fairgrounds at San Jacinto and Greenwood Road.
The incident stemmed from a fight that occurred at the State Fair of Louisiana just minutes before involving a group of students from rival high schools who had ongoing disputes about their basketball teams.
Several people were escorted off the fairgrounds, including students from Fair Park, Huntington and Booker T. Washington.
Johnson, who was among one of the students escorted out of the fair, reportedly fired a shot at the other students, inadvertently striking Jefferson.
Jefferson had just left the fairgrounds, headed home when he was shot. He is not believed to have been involved in the fight.
Detectives are continuing their investigation. At this time, it is unknown if charges will be filed against anyone else.
