Airman killed in Clyde Fant accident

An airman believed to be on his way to Barksdale Air Force Base was killed after the vehicle he was driving crossed the median and hit another car head on.

James Shelnut, 20, was driving a Honda two-door northbound on Clyde Fant about 7:30 a.m. when it crossed the median and hit a Nissan Centra headed southbound on Clyde Fant. The Centra was driven by Nancy McAlpine, 54, of the 3600 block of Dee Street. She was taken to Willis-Knighton Pierremont with minor injuries to her extremities.

Shelnut is from California but worked at Barksdale AFB. It is unknown why his car crossed the median. It appears he was not wearing a seat belt.

McAlpine was wearing a seat belt, and her vehicle’s air bag deployed upon impact.
