Police recruiting underway for next academy

The Shreveport Police Department is now accepting applications for the next Police Academy. The application deadline is Oct. 26, and the exam will be given Nov. 15.

Everyone who passes the exam will be placed on an eligibility list and go through a hiring process that consists of interviews, background checks, physical fitness tests and more. Those accepted will then attend the Shreveport Regional Police Academy for 16 weeks of training, then six months of training on the Field Training Officer Program.

The next police academy is tentatively scheduled to begin in March. The SPD usually holds two academies a year. However, this year’s second academy was canceled. Between retirements and military reserve officers who have been activated, the SPD is looking to hire 30 officers.

"The Shreveport Police Department is a quality law enforcement agency with top notch officers," Police Chief Jim Roberts said. "The training we provide is excellent, and we encourage anyone with an interest in becoming a police officer to apply."

The Shreveport Police Department currently has 489 certified police officers. Starting pay is $24,348 a year, or $2,029 a month. After one year of service, state supplemental pay boosts the annual salary to $27,948, or $2,329 a month.

The department has a 100 percent college tuition reimbursement program and provides additional incentive pay to employees for degrees attained.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, be in good health, have no felony convictions and be of good moral character. The Shreveport Police Department is an equal opportunity employer. To apply, go to Room 208 or 223 of the Shreveport Police Department, 1234 Texas Ave. Or call 673-7150 for more information.
