Police crack down on school related violations

Anyone speeding through school zones or zipping around a stopped school bus should head this warning: If police catch them, they will be stopped.

School safety is as much a concern on campus as it is off campus for the Shreveport Police Department.

Police Chief Jim Roberts said drivers who don’t heed traffic laws are putting young lives at risk.

"Our children are our most precious assets, and we must all do our part to protect them to see that they’re safe," he said. "The Shreveport Police Department will have a zero tolerance effort regarding school zone violations and those who disregard safety around school buses. We would rather everyone pay attention to the law, because we do not like writing citations, but it is necessary to keep our kids safe."

Drivers should remember that school starts Monday in Shreveport and that school zones will again be in effect.

Anyone encountering a school bus that is slowing down with red lights flashing should come to a complete stop, no matter what side of the school bus they’re on and no matter what side of the street they are on. Watch for children crossing intersections and walking in streets.
