Mercedes Benz to donate bicycle

Representatives from Holmes European Motors will present the Shreveport Police Department a new mountain bike for the downtown bike patrol unit on Thursday.

The full-suspension bicycle is valued at $2,000 and has 24 speeds. It is manufactured by AMP for Mercedes Benz.

Shreveport Officer Jimmy Ray learned about the Mercedes bicycle giveaway during the International Police Mountain Bike Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was an instructor.

The new bicycle will be used downtown during the graveyard shift.

But the Shreveport Police Department may get 10 more bicycles, which would be used for patrols not only in downtown, but also in the Queensborough-Ingleside Weed and Seed area.

The new Mercedes bike will be presented at 2 p.m. in front of the Police and Fire Memorial on Clyde Fant Parkway (to the south of the Barnwell Center entrance).
