Cyclist to stop at SPD on cross country trip

A Canadian police officer who is bike riding across the country to raise money for and awareness of autism will make a stop at the Shreveport Police Department Saturday.

John Keating and his assistants will arrive in the parking lot (Murphy Street side) of the police department at 2:30 p.m. He will be greeted by members of the Shreveport Police Department, the Fraternal Order of Police and members of the Northwest Louisiana Autism Chapter.

The public is invited to come and cheer on Keeting, whose son is autistic. He has been biking cross country on a Cycle USA tour since he left New York City on April 27. He is headed to San Diego for a national autism conference on July 19.

Cycle USA stands for Cycle to Understand and Solve Autism. It was created by Keeting, because he noticed there were no telethons or national efforts to raise money for autism research in Canada or the United States. Keeting is a police officer in Courtice, Canada.

Keeting travels about 20 miles an hour, covering about 20 miles a day. He arrives in Shreveport from Little Rock, Arkansas, and will head to Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Houston and Dallas when he departs Shreveport.

For more information, call Sue Yacovissi, local coordinator of the Northwest Louisiana Autism Chapter, at 797-3509. You can also check out the Cycle USA website at: cycleusa.net.
