Chief Roberts calls for inquiry into acceptance of circus tickets

Police Chief Jim Roberts has tapped the Area 1 commander’s office to look into claims that police officers accepted free circus tickets following a PETA demonstration downtown.

The demonstration ended about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday after a topless female demonstrator painted to look like a tiger was arrested for obscene acts and obstructing a public passage.

In response to PETA’s demonstration against the use of circus animals, circus officials were at the scene to defend its handling of the circus animals, as well as to promote the event. As part of the promotion, they handed out free circus tickets.

Roberts has asked for an internal inquiry after concerns were voiced that some police officers allegedly took some of the free tickets.

"We will look into the matter, because we want to make sure our officers acted professionally during this public display," he said.
