Officers to be honored for Armed Robbery Operation

Ninety-five people will receive Unit Citations during a special Commendation Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Thursday for their participation in the 2001 Armed Robbery Suppression Operation.

Those being honored include detectives, patrol officers, narcotics agents, K-9 officers and supervisors whose work directly contributed to the success of the operation.

Officers and investigators who filled the gap of responsibilities left by those temporarily assigned to the robbery operation also will be honored.

The armed robbery suppression operation began in late 2000 to combat a rash of robberies that were occurring in Shreveport. The crimes contributed to a 17 percent overall increase in Shreveport robberies last year.

The department’s efforts culminated in February when police made a record number of robbery arrests, putting 21 people behind bars on a total of 27 robbery charges. From October to February, a total of 78 people were arrested for robbery.

Police Chief Jim Roberts said this operation was one of the largest combined efforts in the history of the Shreveport Police Department and that he is proud of the officers’ accomplishments.
