Police Chief appointed as advisor to national project

Shreveport’s Chief of Police Jim Roberts has been appointed as an advisor to the International Association of Chiefs of Police Domestic Violence Fatality Review Project.

Roberts is one of 12 people from across the country to serve as advisors on the project. Their mission -- review deaths that resulted from domestic violence and develop ways for police to better respond to and prevent such tragedies.

As part of the effort, the advisors will conduct site visits to police department, organize focus groups to discuss the problem and develop training on assessing potentially lethal situations and domestic hostage/barricade situations.

They also will offer national training on the subject and draft articles for agency newsletters.

The group first met in Santa Fe, New Mexico, last week. At that time, each of the advisors shared information about their own activities and efforts related to domestic violence fatalities.

Roberts is the only Chief of Police serving as an advisor. Others are from law enforcement and victims assistance agencies around the country, including Cambridge, Mass.; Tulsa, Okla.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Philadelphia, Penn.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Indianapolis, Indiana; Washington D.C. and Flagstaff, Arizona.
