Man shot over a can of spray starch

A 25-year-old Shreveporter is recovering from two gunshot wounds he received as he and a friend were arguing over a can of spray starch.

Elderick "Tootie" Hays was shot in the right arm and right leg during the incident that occurred around noon at the Wilkinson Terrace Apartments. One of the shots went through his arm and into his chest. He underwent surgery at LSU Hospital but is expected to recover from his injuries.

Meanwhile, police needs citizens’ help in locating the alleged shooter, Demarlyn "Garfield" Stewart, 20, of Shreveport.

Witnesses identified Stewart as the person who shot Hays. The two reportedly were arguing over a can of spray starch that Stewart had borrowed and not returned.

Anyone with information on Stewart’s whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 673-7000 or the detective’s office at 673-6955.
