City prepares for Mardi Gras parades

As thousands of people flock to the routes of this year’s two Mardi Gras parades, public safety will be among the highest priorities. Both parades begin at 4 p.m. at Pierre Bossier Mall. They run along Airline Drive, turn onto Barksdale Boulevard, cross the Shreveport-Barksdale Bridge into Shreveport and turn onto East Kings Highway. The parade ends on Kings at Preston Avenue.

Residents can make the event more enjoyable by listening to instructions given by parade officials, abiding by the city’s laws and being respectful of one another. Here are some things that citizens might like to know before heading to the parades.

Safety tips

* Don’t leave children unattended. Make plans to meet up at a particular location in case

the children are separated from guardians during the parade.

* Do not fight or struggle over beads. Thousands of beads are thrown, so be polite and

respectful for others trying to catch them.

* Keep a safe distance from the floats.

* Keep valuables at home, and make sure cars are securely locked.

* Don’t take purses or wallets to parades. Keep money and other items in front pants

pocket.

* Clean up after yourself. City workers will clean the parade route, but doing your part

will help a lot.
