Police get involved with school detention

The Shreveport Police Department and Midway Middle School are taking a new approach to school detention.

On Saturday, students caught misbehaving in class will be attending a Saturday Detention.

But Saturday Detention isn’t just about making students spend part of their weekend at school. Students learn valuable life skills that can make a difference in their behavior and their lives.

As part of the detention, Lt. J.C. Davis of Queensborough/Ingleside’s Operation Weed and Seed will teach workshops on controlling anger and resolving conflicts.

Davis will teach not only the children, but he will also be speaking to the parents as well. Parents are required to attend Saturday detention with their children.

Saturday Detention is an alternative to discretionary suspension for infractions of school rules. The objectives are to correct errant behavior and to provide experiences in learning, as well as self-discipline, responsibility and community service.

Anyone missing Saturday Detention will be suspended for four days.

Shirley Douglas, assistant principal of discipline at Midway Middle School, said the program began about two weeks ago and is proving to be a positive step for students.

"It’s not all about punishment," Douglas said of Saturday detention. "It’s about development and learning self-discipline and responsibility."

Lt. Davis has done an excellent job in getting both parents and students involved in handling aggression, Douglas said.

This Saturday, students also will get a lesson in attendance and the importance of being at school on time.

Detention begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 10 or 11 a.m. Davis’ workshop begins at 8:35 p.m.
