FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: Dec. 12, 2000

Contact: Kacee Hargrave, Public Information Officer

Drivers should be prepared for ice storms

Ice storms, such as those forecast for tonight, are dangerous in many ways when it comes to driving. It is possible the storm may disable traffic lights. It is the responsibility of each driver to insure they operate their vehicles safely even is these lights are out. The police department offers these tips for driving in wintery weather:

If a driver approaches an intersection at which the light is out, they should slow down and watch for police officers directing traffic. If no officer is at the intersection, they should treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

The first vehicle arriving at the intersection has the right of way. If two or more cars approach the intersection at the same time, the vehicle to the right has the right of way.

When driving in icy conditions, try to avoid overpasses or bridges that tend to ice the fastest. If the vehicle begins to slip on ice, the driver should avoid breaking or turning the steering wheel, as this can make the car skid even more.

Slow down in icy weather, even if the roadway looks safe. Patches of ice are not always visible.

Avoid driving during icy weather. But since that’s not always possible, stay safe and try to enjoy a break from the 100-degree heat!
