The officers are participating in the first 40-hour retrainer course to be offered by the Police Department since 1996. Re-establishing the retrainer was a goal of Shreveport Police Chief Jim Roberts, who says the in-service training will be attended by every Shreveport police officer, including new officers who have recently graduated from the Academy. To accommodate all of the officers, the retrainer is broken into two sessions: 24 hours of mandatory in-service training, which began today, and 16-hours of electives to be offered during the second half of the year. Different groups of officers will attend class eachTuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Mandatory courses of instruction include training in communication skills, defensive tactics, cultural diversity and community-policing issues. Elective courses are selected by each officer from a course catalog which has more than 20 class options.
