Thousands of dollars in original paintings recovered

Shreveport police have recovered five of approximately 10 original paintings by Clementine Hunter that were stolen from a north Shreveport home in July.

Five of the paintings had been sold in New Orleans and were located in Atlanta by Shreveport Detective P.W. Duncan. One painting has been returned to Shreveport and the four others are in police custody and will be shipped to Shreveport from New Orleans and Atlanta.

Clementine Hunter was a Natchitoches painter whose works portray primitive life settings. The recovered paintings are estimated to have a value of between $25,000 and $30,000.

The suspected burglar, 36- year-old Jim Willoughby of Sequin, Texas, was arrested Monday by sheriff's deputies in Guadalupe County, Texas. Guadalupe County is just outside of San Antonio.

Willoughby is charged with simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling and will be returned to Shreveport for prosecution.
