Shreveport takes third in National Night Out competition

Shreveport has again taken a top spot as a national award winner for National Night Out.

The city placed third among National Night Out cities that have populations ranging from 100,000 to 299,000 people.

Roughly 32.5 million people in 9,620 communities nationwide participated in NNO events this past August. About 250 block parties were held in Shreveport with neighbors, police and city officials bonding together to fight crime.

Shreveport has placed in one of the top three positions for the last six years. The award is determined by a final report and video, which are submitted to the National Association of Town Watch and the U.S. Department of Justice.

"This award shows that the city, the police department and the community is working together to ensure the success of National Night Out and the message it sends. This is a clear signal to criminals they will not have a peaceful existence in our city," said Sgt. Tom Amundson, coordinator of this year's event.
