Helmet your Head

Bicycle safety event set for Aug. 26

Kids who like to ride bikes and go to baseball games are in for a grand time Aug. 26, as the first-ever Helmet your Head event previews Back to School Night with the Shreveport Captains.

Thirty bicycles and 500 bicycle helmets will be given away to lucky participants, and all children who attend Helmet your Head in the Captains' parking lot will receive free Captains' tickets for themselves and their families.

The activities begin at 5:30 p.m. with helmet fitting and selection, a safety rule and instruction session and a bicycle obstacle course. Kids completing Helmet your Head at 7:30 p.m. can then proceed to the stadium to watch the Captains play the El Paso Diablos. Police Chief Jim Roberts will throw out the first pitch.

Through November, officers will randomly give away gift certificates for food, toys and other items to children they catch wearing bicycle helmets.

Organizers of the Helmet your Head event are the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of Safe Kids, Think First of the Ark-La-Tex, Shreveport Police Department's Operation Weed and Seed, Attorney William D. Hall and the Shreveport Captains.

Children must be pre-registered to participate in Helmet your Head, although kids not participating in the bicycle event can still receive free tickets to the see the Captains play. To register or for free tickets, call Sgt. Wendell Delaney at 673-6950 or page him at 866-8214. Tickets may be picked up at the office of Police Chief Jim Roberts, located on the first floor of the Shreveport Police Facility, 1234 Texas Ave.
