Shreveport Police investigating shooting of five year old

Shreveport Police are investigating the shooting of a five year old little boy that occurred yesterday morning in Shreveport’s Highland neighborhood.

At approximately 9:07 a.m. on September 14, 2009, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the emergency room at LSUHSC relative to a child arriving there with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Upon arrival, officers learned that the five year old male child had been shot one time and was being rushed into surgery. The child’s wound had been described as life threatening and he is listed in critical condition as of this morning.

Detectives immediately began their investigation and learned that the shooting actually happened at a residence in the 200 block of Wilkinson St. Investigators and crime scene investigators secured the residence there and processed the crime scene for evidence. After spending all day yesterday interviewing people in connection with this shooting, detectives believe that the child apparently gained access to the handgun, which officers have seized, while the adults in the home were distracted. They believe the child then shot himself accidentally. It is important to add that this is an ongoing investigation and investigators are still processing evidence and conducting interviews.

Anyone having any information concerning this case is urged to call Shreveport Police detectives at 318-673-6955 or Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
