FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shreveport Police to keep a watchful eye on school zones

The Shreveport Police Department will be maintaining an enhanced presence in local school zones as another school year begins.

On Monday, August 17, 2009, as students all over Shreveport prepare to head back to school, Shreveport Police officers will be working hard to keep them safe. Officers with the department’s Traffic Bureau, as well as Community Liaison Officers and patrol officers, will be out and about observing area school zones and ensuring compliance with speed limits in those zones. Motorists are urged to use caution and pay close attention to those signs and or flashing yellow lights that indicate they are entering a school zone. Drivers should also be mindful of school buses and remember that Louisiana state law requires traffic on both sides of the roadway to come to a complete stop at least 30 feet from the bus while children are loading or unloading.

Shreveport Police Chief Henry Whitehorn stressed how important these traffic issues are, saying, “Our officers are going to be very visible as we work to keep our children safe. We are asking motorists to work with us in our efforts and be extra careful as they drive in school zones or around school buses and bus stops.”
