Fire Safety Programs


Shreveport Fire Public Education Programs


The following is a list, as well as a short explanation of the programs that we provide to the general public and business community:


 

Children Programs

                      

Fire Safety House – A 30 foot long two story self contained house that is used instruct children what to do if their house should ever be involved in a fire. Additional topics are covered such as the importance of fire safety, smoke detector use, escape plans, and the technique of stop, drop and roll.

 

Pluggie (red fire hydrant) – This is a remote controlled robots with a two-way communication system utilized to deliver fire safety messages.

 

Mc Squirt (red and yellow fire hydrant) – This is a remote controlled robots with a two-way communication system utilized to deliver fire safety messages.

 

Flashy (Dalmatian in a fire engine) – This is a remote controlled robots with a two-way communication system utilized to deliver fire safety messages.

 

Spot & Sparky – A Dalmatian costume used to complement multiple fire safety educational programs.

 

Stranger Danger Safety – This program is for any age and covers various topics as it relates to encounters with strangers. 

 

Buzz E. Smoke Detector – This is a tabletop display safety house with a smoke detector which plays preset fire safety messages.

 

· E.D.I.T.H.Exit Drill In The Home teaches participants the importance of a home escape plan and how to get out and stay out in case of a fire.

Commercial

 

Fire Drills – Companies or organizations are assisted with a fire evacuation plan, conduct and critic of fire drills.

 

Evacuation Plan – Companies or organizations are assisted with creation of building evacuation plan. Meetings are conducted with representatives to help establish a plan, provide advice on the most effective means of evacuation.

 

Fire Extinguisher Program – This program targets any group on how to properly operate a fire extinguisher. Class A, B, C, and D fire extinguishers are covered in conjunction with the acronym PASS (Pull Aim Squeeze, Sweep). The organization hosting the class must furnish the fire extinguishers.

 

Fire Safety on the Job – This program is used to inform employers and employees of businesses about fire safety in the workplace. Various topics are covered, such as evacuation, proper use of fire extinguishers, etc.

 

High Schools

 

Career Day - Upon request, we participate in local career fairs or expositions with an exhibition booth. SFD personnel staff the booth, which features a static display highlighting SFD actions, fire and life safety, and are available to answer questions.

 

Arson/Alcohol Safety - This program covers the consequences of alcohol and arson related fires.  Additionally, participants are educated on the definition and penalties of arson with a practical demonstration by an investigator.

Seniors

 

Fall Prevention – Slip and falls are covered with the facts given to participants on how to identify and prevent injuries.

 

Kitchen Fire Safety – Participants are educated on cooking safety and how to identify unsafe behavior and prevent cooking fires.

 

Carbon Monoxide Safety – Participants are given the facts on carbon monoxide poisoning i.e. what are the sources, how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and signs and symptoms.

 

Home Fire Safety- Participants are educated on how to identify and reduce fire hazards in their home.  Additionally, participants are taught why seniors are at a higher risk and how to increase their odds of surviving a fire.

 

Residential

 

Home Inspection- Residents are given free home inspections.  During the home inspections fire and safety hazards are identified, and information is provided to residents on how to correct the hazards found.

 

E.D.I.T.H. (Home Evacuation) - Residents are educated on fire and the need for an evacuation plan specific to their home.

          

Home Fire Safety- Participants are educated on how to identify and reduce fire hazards in their home.  Additionally, participants are taught why seniors are at a higher risk and how to increase their odds of surviving a fire.

 

Middle Schools

 

Kitchen/Latchkey Safety- This program educates children who are left at home for short periods of time without adult supervision on cooking safety, stranger danger, and how to identify and correct unsafe behavior.

                  

Hospitals & Nursing Homes

 

In Service Programs – assistance can be provided for any business or industry with their in-service training on fire safety. This class can be tailored to the individual needs of the group.

Other Programs

 

Juvenile Fire Setters Program - This program is designed as a tool to help parents address the problem of fire misuse by a child in their home. The counseling session usually lasts for one hour at no cost.  The use of videos, activities and discussion to teach respect and proper handling of fire and fire tools are utilized as part of our evaluation, with emphasis placed on the main message: fire and fire tools are for adults only. The age and circumstances of each child are taken into consideration and occasionally, circumstances may indicate that an alternative form of help is necessary, with referral for professional counseling.

 

Safe Babysitting – This program teaches fire safety and emergency procedures that all young adults should know when they are baby-sitting.

 

Holiday Fire Safety – This is a seasonal fire safety program used to address fire hazards associated with various holidays.  This program is usually focused on the 4th of July, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.

 

Fire Safety for the Blind & Visually Impaired – This is a fire safety program designed specifically for individuals with a visual impairment or for caregivers of an individual with a visual impairment.

 

Fire Safety for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing- This is a fire safety program designed specifically for caregivers of an individual with a hearing impairment.

 

Fire Safety Tips for People with Disabilities- This is a fire safety program designed specifically for individuals with a disability or for caregivers of an individual with a disability.

 

Stress Prevention – This program covers stress, how to deal with it, the common causes, health effects, and how to prevent it.

 

General Fire Safety – This program provides general fire safety education to participants and is often customized to meet the needs of the audience.

 

Health Fair – This program provides a variety of fire safety literature for participants.

 

Free Smoke Detector Program - This is an ongoing program where smoke detectors are installed and batteries provided to maintain a safe environment for citizens of Shreveport.

 

Fire Prevention Mobile Training Unit- This is a mobile self-contained training unit that is useful for taking fire safety programs to high risk audiences. Additionally, this unit operates as a rolling billboard with safety messages.
