The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division is responsible for the emergency medical and ambulance services provided by the City of Shreveport. It provides emergency care and transportation for sick and injured persons, develops and maintains standards for treatment, issues medical equipment and supplies, and serves at special events.

The EMS staff consists of the Chief of EMS, Assistant Chief of EMS, three EMS Officers, two Stock Clerks and an Administrative Assistant.

2007 Accomplishments

  • Established a CHEMPAK Room

  • EMS Computer repair issues to SFD IT Division

  • Completed Cardiac/Autopulse Research and had paper published (paper submitted by Dr. Amy Gutman)

  • Completed revision and implementation of EMS Guidelines

  • Spinal Package Omission

  • Calling Codes in the Field

  • New AHA Guidelines

  • Further improved the QA/QI process

  • EZ IO and Quik Trach Inservice completed

  • Purchased eleven new Hammerhead computers and equipment

  • Completed Stages 1 and 2 of the Pandemic IAP

  • Pinnacle Abstract (Paper completed and submitted by Dr. Amy Gutman - Implications of an ALS Skills Tracking Program on Paramedic Performance and Staffing.

2008 Goals and Objectives

  • Place the tenth medic unit on line

  • Provide assistance to Fire Prevention in respect to Safety Town and also with the Risk Watch program in public schools

  • Move forward with developing a STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction)

  • Program to assist hospitals with reducing door to balloon times

  • Move forward with research of companies and software which will enable the merging of electronic reporting into a unified system

  • Continue to seek funding and purchase and replace older obsolete equipment

  • Improve inventory management and reduce unnecessary waste by incorporating an Inventory Management System

  • Continue to improve overall report writing skills through QA/QI and training.

  • Implement CPAP on all medic units

  • Continue efforts of SFD, Homeland Security, and all regional EMS and Law enforcement agencies to adopt a unified method of patient ID during an MCI by adopting same language/equipment strategies.
